Deep Desolation: Subliminal visions

10/03/11  ||  Khlysty

Generally, when I take up the chore of reviewing some label-sent shit, I’m VERY weary, as most of the time the material is sub-par to say the least. Not so with Deep Desolation, though. These Polacks really bring the pain with their first record, “Subliminal Visions”, although there’s nothing subliminal here.

The band’s being pigeon-holed as “death/doom”, and, while there are elements of both genres in their music, what I hear is a band that makes anthemic, overdriven, rocking music, based mainly on classic underground metal. And, lemme tell ya upfront that me likes the music mucho-mucho.

Why? Well, mainly because it’s music that really gets my blood boiling: the riffs are simple, stomping mammoths of guitar savagery, dancing somewhere between Hellhammer and early death/doom, with a lo-fi “feel” of stone-age black metal thrown in for good measure. And, even though the band clearly avoids going warp-speed fast, preferring a more leisurely pace, the aggression quantity and grooviness are fucking impeccable.

Each and every song is based on a crunchy meaty riff, solid groove by the always fucking dependable rhythm section and some creepy-ass croaked/rasped vocals. But that’s not all there is to it: the two guitars are always building an amazing filigree of leads and note-runs around the riffs, making the music even more thorny and aggressive. Plus, they don’t seem to be afraid of a little experimentation with form and texture, as is obvious by the 11-minutes-long centerpiece of the record, the song “Subliminal Visions”.

Production-wise, this is pretty good shit: there’s volume, there’s enough clarity, so as not get things blurry, there’s enough rawness to keep the wussies away. My only gripe is a certain lack of downtunedfulness, which methinks woulda made the songs even more impressive and powerful. Also, I think that a more focused editing of the songs coulda been applied. But, hey, that’s only me; and, let me repeat to cap things off, that “Subliminal Visions”, even though not groundbreaking, is actually very good shit.
